Speed Baccarat Third Card Rule

The third card rule is the most complex part of baccarat — but you never have to apply it yourself. The rules are fixed and automatic. Understanding them helps you follow the action in real time and removes any confusion about why a third card was or was not drawn.

When Does the Third Card Rule Apply?

The third card rule applies only when neither hand holds a Natural (8 or 9). Once a Natural is dealt, the round ends immediately with no third cards. The Player position acts first, followed by the Banker position.

Player Third Card Rule

The Player's drawing rule is simple. Player total 0–5: DRAW a third card. Player total 6 or 7: STAND (no third card). Player total 8 or 9: NATURAL — no third card drawn, round ends. This part of the rule never changes regardless of what the Banker holds.

Banker Third Card Rule — Player Stood

If the Player stood (held 6 or 7), the Banker follows this simple rule. Banker total 0–5: DRAW. Banker total 6–7: STAND. Banker total 8–9: NATURAL (already resolved).

Banker Third Card Rule — Player Drew

When the Player drew a third card, the Banker's decision depends on both the Banker's total AND the Player's third card. Banker 0, 1, 2: always DRAW. Banker 3: DRAW unless Player's third card was 8. Banker 4: DRAW if Player's third card was 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7. Banker 5: DRAW if Player's third card was 4, 5, 6, or 7. Banker 6: DRAW if Player's third card was 6 or 7. Banker 7: always STAND.

Why Is the Banker Rule More Complicated?

The Banker's more complex drawing rules are what give the Banker bet its statistical advantage. The Banker can see the Player's result before deciding, which in a land casino required human judgment. In the modern game this is handled automatically, but the rules were designed specifically to give the Banker a winning edge of approximately 50.68% of decided hands.

Does Knowing the Rule Change Your Strategy?

Not directly. Since all drawing decisions are automatic, knowing the third card rule does not change what bets you place. However, understanding it removes confusion during fast rounds and helps you predict what will happen next — useful when you are playing multiple tables simultaneously or using roadmaps to track patterns.

  • Scenario 1: Player 4, Banker 5, No Natural

    Player total 4 → Player draws a third card (say it's a 7, making Player's hand 11 → 1). Banker total 5, Player's third card was 7. Banker draws per rule (draws when third card is 4–7). Say Banker draws a 6 → 5+6=11 → 1. Tie.

  • Scenario 2: Player 7, Banker 3

Player total 7 → Player stands. Banker total 3 → Banker draws (rule: draw on 0–5 when Player stood). Say Banker draws a 5 → 3+5=8 → Natural. Banker wins.

  • Scenario 3: Player draws 8 as third card

Player had 2, draws 8 → hand is 10 → 0. Banker has 3. Banker third card rule: on 3, stand if Player's third card was 8. Banker stands on 3. Player has 0, Banker has 3. Banker wins.

  • Scenario 4: Natural Occurs

Banker is dealt K + 9 = 9 Natural. No third card rule applies. Banker wins immediately. All Banker bets are paid at 0.95:1.
