Speed Baccarat Card Values Explained

Getting card values right is the foundation of playing Speed Baccarat confidently. Unlike blackjack, where card values shift depending on context, baccarat card values are fixed and unchanging. Once you memorise the simple ranking system, you can evaluate any hand instantly.

The Speed Baccarat Card Value Table

Ace = 1 point. Cards 2–9 = face value (2 is worth 2, 3 is worth 3, and so on). 10 = 0 points. Jack = 0 points. Queen = 0 points. King = 0 points. This means that over half the deck — all tens and face cards — contribute zero to a hand total.

Why High Cards Are Worth Zero

In traditional card games, 10s and face cards carry the most value. Baccarat reverses this logic. The design ensures that hands cluster around the middle of the 0–9 range, creating frequent competitive rounds and reducing the chance of a dominant hand appearing every deal.

Single-Digit Totals Only

Baccarat never uses totals above 9. When two cards add up to a two-digit number, only the units digit counts. Examples: 5 + 8 = 13 → value is 3. 7 + 9 = 16 → value is 6. K + 6 = 6 → value is 6 (King is zero). A + 9 = 10 → value is 0. This wrapping system means even the worst starting hand (0) can still win with a favourable third card.

Natural 8 and Natural 9

When either the Player or Banker is dealt a two-card total of exactly 8 or 9, this is called a Natural hand. A Natural 9 is the strongest hand in baccarat. A Natural 8 is second strongest. No further cards are drawn when a Natural appears. If both hands have naturals, the higher natural wins. Equal naturals result in a Tie.

Calculating Three-Card Hands

The same single-digit rule applies to three-card hands. Add all three card values together, then take only the units digit. Example: Player holds 5, 7, 3 = 15 → hand value is 5. Banker holds 2, 4, 8 = 14 → hand value is 4. Player wins with 5 versus Banker's 4.

Suit Has No Effect on Value

In Speed Baccarat, the suit of a card — Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, or Spades — has absolutely no bearing on the hand value. Suits only matter for the Perfect Pair side bet, where two cards of identical rank and identical suit in the same position pay out at 25:1.

  • Example 1: Ace + King

Ace (1) + King (0) = 1. This is a weak starting hand. Under the third-card rule, the Player would draw a third card since 1 is below 5.

  • Example 2: 7 + 2

7 + 2 = 9. This is a Natural 9 — the best possible hand. No third card is drawn. The position holding this hand wins outright.

  • Example 3: 6 + 8

6 + 8 = 14 → baccarat value is 4. Not a natural. The Player stands or draws depending on the complete third-card table.

  • Example 4: Q + J + 5

    Queen (0) + Jack (0) + 5 = 5. This three-card hand has a value of 5, which would beat any hand valued at 0–4.

  • Example 5: 3 + 9

    3 + 9 = 12 → baccarat value is 2. Despite hitting 12 on paper, the actual value is 2 — a relatively weak position.
